Histochemical Study of Mucous Secreting Cells in skin of Korean Amphibia

Abstract
Neutral, weakly acidic and sulfated mucosubstances were detected histochemically in order to com¡þprehend more close the balance between water and electrolytes in amphibian skin, and their distribution and the distribution of mucous gland and serous one were studied on dorsal, ventral and thigh part of ten Korean amphibian species. The results of the observation are as follow: 1. The mucosubstances of amphibian skin are composed of neutral, weakly and strongly acidic mucos¡þ
ubstances.
2. Neutral mucosubstance of mucous gland is more than the others, and it is more detected on Bonr¡þbina orientalis. Rana rugosa and Kaloula tornieri.
3. Weakly acidic mucosubstance of mucous gland is positive in all species and it is strongly detected in Rana nigromaculata, Bombina orientalis and Rana dybowskii.
4. Strongly acidic mucosubstance of mucous gland is less detected than the others, but strongly detected in Bombina orientalis and Rana rugosa; however, it is hard to make out whether or not it exists in Hynabius leeclzi, Hyla atborea and Rana amurensis.
5. It is supposed that the mucinous differentiation in amphibian skin is due to maintain the balance between water and electrolytes for adapting to different circumstances.
